Your CPA and Your Advisor Are in a Relationship. They've Never Spoken.

Together, but not really.

Your CPA knows your income, your deductions, and your tax bill. Your advisor knows your portfolio, your allocation, and your risk tolerance. Whether they know it or not, every decision each one makes affects the other. And in almost every client relationship I have ever seen, they have never once spoken.

This is not anyone's fault. CPAs are buried January through April. Advisors are managing portfolios and scheduling annual reviews. Nobody sits down and says "let's get everyone in a room." So nobody does. The result is a very expensive silence.

What Actually Happens When Nobody Talks

Your advisor harvests losses in October. Your CPA, filing in April, has no idea those losses exist. The loss bank sits unused. A $200,000 real estate gain goes fully taxed when it didn't have to.

Your CPA recommends maxing your traditional 401(k). Your advisor, not knowing this, builds your taxable account around assets that generate ordinary income – compounding the exact problem the 401(k) contribution was trying to solve.

You exercise stock options in a year when your income is already at its peak. Nobody flagged it. The AMT bill arrives in April like an unwelcome houseguest.

Two professionals, one client, and no line of communication between them.

The Fix Is One Phone Call

This is not a soft alignment problem. It is a dollar problem – measured in basis points annually and six figures over a decade. Asset location, Roth conversion timing, harvesting strategy – every one of these decisions depends on information that lives on your CPA's desk. Your advisor is optimizing in a vacuum.

The fix is one call at the start of the year and one before December 31. Your advisor and your CPA, reviewing your income picture and your plan for the next twelve months. That is it.

The reason it does not happen is not because it is hard. It is because most advisors were never trained to think this way. At STQ, every client engagement starts with that conversation. Not because it is a nice touch – because it is how tax-aware wealth management actually works.

If your advisor and your CPA have never spoken, that conversation is overdue. We'd be happy to start it.
